We were the first studio to teach
authentic, Classical Pilates in
London. It was developed by
Joseph Pilates during the middle
part of the last century, in New
York. That's why we named our
own studio New York Pilates.
Many of our teachers studied with
Romana Kryzanaowska, a direct
protégé of Joseph Pilates who
still takes classes in the New York studio and internationally despite
being in her 80s.
We're one of the biggest studios
in London with a full range of
classes for different abilities.

Why Pilates?
Pilates is a series of workouts for
stretching and strengthening leg,
arm, back and stomach muscles.
One of its main benefits is to
develop your core muscles,
found in your abdominal, back
and pelvic areas. This improves
co-ordination, posture and
balance which gives you a lean
athletic look.
Pilates teaches you to take what
you learn in the studio and apply
it to your everyday life. It makes
all your movement more efficient
so it's the perfect compliment to
other forms of exercise or just for
making long hours at your desk
more comfortable.
Pilates is also beneficial for
rehabilitation and can be
practised during pregnancy.
Our Classes
There are two options when trying
Pilates for the first time.
If you are in good health you can
try an introduction to a Pilates
mat class. These are held on
Saturday mornings at 10:30 and
give you a taste of what Pilates
is all about. After the class you
can discuss with your teacher
what is the best routine for you.
If you have any injuries or chronic
pain, we recommend starting
with an assessment class on the
equipment. This is an opportunity
for your trainer to fully assess
your needs and recommend
which sort of sessions will work
best for you.
With as little as two sessions a
week you will immediatley notice
changes in the way you look
and feel.

options for buying classes with

Equipment classes
Our studio uses only the genuine
Gratz equipment, built to the
specifications recommended by
Joseph Pilates himself.
Working with the equipment
provides extra resistance which
builds strength and stamina
quicker than mat work alone.
Once you've done a few months
of mat classes we recommend
you try an equipment class.
They are also ideal for anyone
recovering from injury.
We offer individual sessions if
you have specific problem areas
you need to work on or just want
a more personalised workout.
For a more affordable option, we
offer group classes.
Please note, a private assessment
session must be completed prior
to entering a group class. This
ensures everyone attends the
correct class for their ability, and
helps to set out personal goals.
Pre and post-natal classes
Pilates is the best exercise for
both during and after your
pregnancy. If you have never
practiced Pilates before we
recommend you wait until 12
weeks into your pregnancy
before starting. You can practice
Pilates right the way up until
the birth and start again as soon
as you've had your 6-8 week
check afterwards.
Pre-natal classes concentrate
on strengthening the muscles
used to support the baby as
it grows and relaxing tension
that builds in the back, shoulders
and feet where the weight of the
baby causes the most strain.
The strengthening of abdominal
and pelvic floor muscles and
increased muscle stamina help
during labour and in recovery
afterward. Many of our clients
have reported really short labours
and no need for pain relief during
the birth.
We offer group pre and post-natal
mat classes as well as individual
equipment sessions. Babies up
to crawling age are welcome in
the post-natal classes.
Pilates is also ideal for helping
the body to return to normal after
pregnancy. It helps to correct
postural changes forced on your
body by the weight of the baby
and to help return your stomach
and pelvic floor muscles back to
their pre-pregnancy state.
Mat classes
Working on the mat allows you
to really learn how to isolate
and control your muscles without
the support of a machine.
For intermediate and advanced
students, mat classes are a
great way to supplement your
equipment classes or other
forms of exercise.
We recommend two mat classes
a week for best results.
A great, economical way to
learn classical Pilates.
Gyrotonic© and Gyrokinesis©
The Gyrotonic Expansion System©
is a form of exercise that uses
specially designed equipment
to work on co-ordination, strength
and flexibility with minimal effort.
The flow of the movement and the
even resistance of the equipment
removes any jarring action which
can cause injury in other forms
of exercise.
By using circular and spiralling
movements as well as specific
breathing patterns, it brings better
blood flow to the spine and the
internal organs giving you more
energy throughout the day.
If you experience chronic pain
in your neck and shoulders, this
class teaches you how to use
your body without any tension.
Gyrotonic is taught on the
Gyrotonic machine in a private
session. From February 2010,
duets will be available for a more
economical price. Please see
the
price list for more details.
Gyrokinesis© is Gyrotonics but
without the equipment and is
conducted in group mat classes.
Childrens classes
New York Pilates hosts weekly
creative dance classes for
children, taught by professional
dancers and choreographers
from Mala Cherga Theatre.
Using energetic games, magical
stories and a wide variety of
music, these classes provide a
unique experience for your child
to improve their concentration
and co-ordination and explore
their creativity. And they're fun.
Classes are for 3-5 year olds
or 6-9 year olds.
Powerplate© classes
The Power Plate© is a premium
vibration device which gives
the body's muscles a high-speed
low impact workout by using
vibrations to stimulate contraction
and relaxation.
It can tone muscles and burn fat
during sessions as short as 15
minutes per day, 3 times a week.
For best results try combining
this with your regular Pilates or
Gyrotonic workout.
